The Shawshank Redemption: never has prison seemed so awesome, yet at the same time...no, never mind, prison is never awesome. Even so, regardless of what those staunchy and wrinkly old movie critics have to say, it's a great movie. Why is it great? Good question, it's a little complicated. To begin with, realism is a little lost on this movie, I can't exactly say I've spent much time in prison, but i would imagine it sucks so bad a movie would never be made depicting what it's truly like. But why should this be a problem? This is America, and realism just isn't as fun as lands where unicorns roam and rainbows never fade and where Morgan Freeman can "get you things". Speaking of Morgan Freeman, I'll tell you he's the real reason Shawshank was so awesome; the closer in proximation one is to Morgan freeman, the closer one becomes to attaining true enlightenment, it's just the way things are. Back on topic, I think one of the things that really gets you into this movie is the characters. Personally, and I'm sure many could agree, I love good characters. Never did I think I could find myself relating to a rabble of thieves, murderers, and bankers, to tell you the truth it's a bit unnerving. You really get a feeling for these guys, you want them to be innocent, you want them not get beaten toa pulp, to get those beers, or to read some books. You become a personal cheerleader for a collective of inmates, and its not half bad. Maybe this is why I would call it a classic, because every time you watch The Shawshank Redemption, it's like paying a visit to your friends. Your dangerous, murderous, danger to society friends.
